NAPOLI & THE AMALFI COAST

AMALFI COAST

As we journey by car from the hustle and bustle of modern Naples, a slight bend in the road marks a dramatic change in scenery as we advance to the relaxing serenity of one of Italy’s best-known natural attractions – the Amalfi Coast.

A stretch of coastline on the southern coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula in the Province of Salerno in Southern Italy, the area boasts a typically Mediterranean climate and is easily accessed from neighboring cities such as Pisa and Naples.

It’s a popular tourist destination for the region and Italy as a whole, attracting thousands of tourists annually – and it’s easy to see why. From fine dining to fabulous villas made famous in Hollywood films, it presents a way of life that seems effortlessly chic. It simply delivers on every aspect.

However, trying to escape the growing crowds during Italy’s month-long August break can take the relaxing element out of an otherwise quiet holiday. So just when is the best time to visit to unwind and enjoy the serenity?

If you are planning on visiting more than one destination and want to go on a tour of the region, optimum times to visit are May-June and September-October. And while winter may sound appealing to those travelling on a budget or wanting to avoid crowds, this can be made difficult by the simple fact that a large majority of the hotels here close during this period.

However, travelling in spring does mean that you can still enjoy a leisurely outdoor breakfast in Positano or Ravello before visiting a tucked away beach for a swim and then staying out late into the night in Sorrento. You would also have time for day trips to nearby attractions such as Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii.

If the weather does make a turn for the worst, fear not. You can always turn your luck around (while keeping your bank balance happy) by lunching in neighboring Naples. What better way to recharge your batteries than a true Neapolitan pizza before heading out on a walking tour of Spaccanapoli! Just ensure that you have a guide with you.
